A Brief History of the Wrist Watch

!±8± A Brief History of the Wrist Watch

The list of fashion accessories is certainly incomplete and deficient without wrist watches. Initially used for telling time, the purpose of watches has excelled beyond that boundary. It is now a fashion necessity amongst the many fashion accessories available. People have started affiliating them with status symbols. Once known as merely time pieces, wrist watches are worn for a variety of purposes today.

Wrist watches that are designed and manufactured today propose significant amount of accuracy, convenience and panache. Where some people purchase wrist watches because of their precision with regards to technical aspects, for example, to measure time to the nearest millisecond, there are people who purchase it simply because of its aesthetic appearance; this is the reason why some segments of people are willing to pay, thousands, even millions of amount to purchase them.

The year 1868 marks the first making of the wrist watch as far as historical records stretch; Patek Philippe was the inventor. Wrist watches were considered part of women's ornaments. Whereas, men used to keep pocket watches.. This trend persisted till the World War 1. Around this time, the soldiers realised that having the time piece on the wrist is far more convenient and better than carrying it in the pocket.

The conventional design of wrist watches that we see and wear today were brought by Louis Cartier. He had created a watch for Santos Dumont, a flying inaugural hero. The year 1911 marks the general sale of such a watch. The very category of watch turned into the blueprint of the type of wrist watches we wear today.

The shape of the dial started to modify from the conventional classic round shape. Other brands started to evolve, apart from classical Cartier wrist watch. These brands had attributes with regards to design and shape. The "polyplan" design watch was launched by Movado, while the rectangular shaped watch was released by Patek Philippe which got much fame and recognition. This was called "clock reference n.1953"

Several watches with different styles and design began to evolve in the watch market after the year 1913. Some models of the watches got their inspirations from the armoured cars. Examples of such watches include "gondola" created by Patek Philippe and "Tank" launched by Louis Cartier. Amongst the many names in the watch market was one of Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constanin. The watches were now available with advanced and developed features. These watches were capable to keep track of lunar phases, months and days.

When it comes to watches, the name of Rolex cannot be ignored. Rolex made its mark in the watch market in 1920s. The first launch of this brand was the very elegant and sophisticated Rolex Prince. This watch was equipped with dual time feature. The second sector was larger than the minutes one, and this quality gathered much attention. Several other watches were launched and till now, advancements and differentiation amongst them is witnessed.

A Short History of Development of the Wrist Watches

!±8± A Short History of Development of the Wrist Watches

Wrist watches are elegant, portable and convenient. They make life easier for those of us who have an obsession with keeping ahead of time and keeping up with the daily busy schedules. A wrist watch is quite possibly one of your best investments. Its development over the ages has been rapid, keeping in mind the progress in technological field. Breil watches are among top brands of the watches.

Patek Phillips made the first watch in 1868. In 1888, Louis Cartier developed the first ladies wrist watch with diamonds and sporting a gold bracelet. The stylised Santos-Dumont watch by Cartier gained great recognition, and by 1911, this type of watch was available for mass consumption in the market.

The earliest wrist watches were round shaped. However, as time went by, the watches started to diversify with Movado introducing the "Polypan" shaped watch. Patek Phillips introduced the rectangular shaped watch known as "clock reference n. 1593" to the market. The year 1913 saw many other watches being sold in the global market. More diverse shapes and sizes of watches started to be manufactured and put on sale for the masses.

As new manufacturers jumped into this exciting field, watches started getting rapid makeovers. Some watches were of course in more demand than others such as Constantin, Patek Phillipe and Cartier.

Movado made an army wrist watch with protective grid over the glass to give it greater strength, in 1912. And in 1914, the first alarm watch was introduced by Eterna.

However, with the advent of a new watch company, all others were left behind. Rolex debuted in the world of wrist watch making in 1920. Rolex came on the scene with its elegant "Rolex Prince" that made use of the "dual time" feature, a revolutionary move that allowed it great recognition. Its salient feature was the introduction of the "second sector" being larger than the "minute sector", something that had not been tried before. It was later followed by "Rolex Oyster", the first water resistant wrist watch.

The production of "Reverse" by Jaeger Le Coultre was also considered revolutionary since it could be turned to an angle of 180 within its case, in effect protecting the crystal and the dial.

John Hardwood invented the first automatic wrist watch in 1923. World War II saw even greater technologically advanced watches being manufactured. Omega had supplied both the British and American troops with wrist watches in World War I. This supply of wrist watches to troops was carried on by Hamilton, Omega and Breitling in 1946, during the war years.

1953 saw the manufacture of the first battery powered watch by Lips, whereas the first electric watch was produced by Hamilton in 1957. More innovations were to follow with the development of watches, for example, ones that displayed date on the watch face, were made out of stainless steel, had an LCD embedded in them and used the electric tuning fork to function.

All this and more is what wrist watches have as a proud history. Major innovations in this field may be accounted for by only a few big companies, but the credit goes to all the heads behind the development of ever-refined watches that we get to see currently.

!±8± How to Spot a Counterfeit Watch

Whenever you are planning to buy a branded watch, you should make sure that it is a genuine product. It is very important to identify fake watches and to find the ways by which you can be protected from such fraudulent deals. There are a number of counterfeited watch companies that are manufacturing such watches so ingeniously that nobody can easily recognise that it is a fake.

Counterfeiters are producing imitations of all famous luxury watch brands that are sold worldwide. You can't get an authentic warranty by getting certificates with same serial numbers in an accurately professional manner. It is very easy to copy boxes, bags, kits, and instruction manuals in an ingenuous manner so that nobody can believe it is a fake product. Rolex is one of the brands suffering at the hands of counterfeiters.

Before buying a genuine watch, you should check whether the materials are genuine, and that the watch comes with a sapphire crystal face and back, without any scratches. The materials used in the manufacturing of the watches will tell you the reality.

If a watch is manufactured with stainless steel or titanium, it will weigh more, while the counterfeit watches are manufactured using aluminum, which is light in weight. You can also estimate the quality of a genuine branded watch by its functioning. If it has a quartz mechanism, it will be a genuine watch.

If you have any doubts while buying a watch that it might be a counterfeit, you shouldn't buy it, as you will regret it afterward for paying so much. If you want to purchase a Rolex watch, you should know how to spot a fake. You shouldn't waste your money on counterfeit pieces of jewellery either. According to a Swiss Customer Service survey, approximately 30-40 million counterfeit watches are manufactured per year, so you should be aware of all unscrupulous sellers that are selling fake Rolex watches.

It is estimated that almost 40% of counterfeit watches are manufactured in China, as Chinese manufacturers are using tricks such as presenting the counterfeit watch with a picture of the genuine prestigious watch brand on the boxes. You will also find that the counterfeit version of any latest brand watch reaches the marketplace before the genuine branded version.

There are two kinds of counterfeit watch. The first kind of counterfeited watch are presented with low prices, and have low quality, functionality and design. The second kind of counterfeit watch resembles completely the genuine designer watch, with high price tags. They are manufactured with relatively good quality and materials. Counterfeit Rolex watches are unlawfully sold in the marketplace to gain as much attraction as the original one. This is endemic in Asian countries such as India, Taiwan, China and Korea. These are real counterfeits of European designer watches, as they manufacture replicas of designer watches.

If you buy a Rolex watch, you should check its transparent back case, which has unique features along with a genuine logo design. The weight of the genuine branded Rolex is comparatively heavier than other counterfeit watches. Therefore, you should check and mark the differences between genuine and counterfeit watches before buying them.
