The list of fashion accessories is certainly incomplete and deficient without wrist watches. Initially used for telling time, the purpose of watches has excelled beyond that boundary. It is now a fashion necessity amongst the many fashion accessories available. People have started affiliating them with status symbols. Once known as merely time pieces, wrist watches are worn for a variety of purposes today.

Wrist watches that are designed and manufactured today propose significant amount of accuracy, convenience and panache. Where some people purchase wrist watches because of their precision with regards to technical aspects, for example, to measure time to the nearest millisecond, there are people who purchase it simply because of its aesthetic appearance; this is the reason why some segments of people are willing to pay, thousands, even millions of amount to purchase them.

The year 1868 marks the first making of the wrist watch as far as historical records stretch; Patek Philippe was the inventor. Wrist watches were considered part of women's ornaments. Whereas, men used to keep pocket watches.. This trend persisted till the World War 1. Around this time, the soldiers realised that having the time piece on the wrist is far more convenient and better than carrying it in the pocket.

The conventional design of wrist watches that we see and wear today were brought by Louis Cartier. He had created a watch for Santos Dumont, a flying inaugural hero. The year 1911 marks the general sale of such a watch. The very category of watch turned into the blueprint of the type of wrist watches we wear today.

The shape of the dial started to modify from the conventional classic round shape. Other brands started to evolve, apart from classical Cartier wrist watch. These brands had attributes with regards to design and shape. The "polyplan" design watch was launched by Movado, while the rectangular shaped watch was released by Patek Philippe which got much fame and recognition. This was called "clock reference n.1953"

Several watches with different styles and design began to evolve in the watch market after the year 1913. Some models of the watches got their inspirations from the armoured cars. Examples of such watches include "gondola" created by Patek Philippe and "Tank" launched by Louis Cartier. Amongst the many names in the watch market was one of Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constanin. The watches were now available with advanced and developed features. These watches were capable to keep track of lunar phases, months and days.

When it comes to watches, the name of Rolex cannot be ignored. Rolex made its mark in the watch market in 1920s. The first launch of this brand was the very elegant and sophisticated Rolex Prince. This watch was equipped with dual time feature. The second sector was larger than the minutes one, and this quality gathered much attention. Several other watches were launched and till now, advancements and differentiation amongst them is witnessed.
